"Identity is a role we impersonate."
(Sartre)
A key insight of Buddhism is that the Self is not the substantial entity we take it to be, and this basic misunderstanding about our true nature causes suffering. We will explore how this misunderstanding arises, and how we continually reinforce the illusion of a permanent Self. In doing so, we will come up against the apparent contradiction that while psychotherapy is often about constructing or reconstructing a healthy sense of self, Buddhism is about deconstructing it. We will have an opportunity to explore the irony of such paradoxical questions as 'If there is no Self, who is sitting in the chair opposite the client?' and 'Who is sitting in the chair opposite the therapist?'. Through meditation, practical exercises, and discussion of Buddhist texts
and non-duality therapy we will address assumptions and beliefs about
the Self, and how these impact on our own lives, as well as on our therapy
work. |
